We all know how great things women have achieved in history, and how powerful they can be. If you’re still somewhat hesitant about this, let me introduce you a remarkable example of womanly determination, strength, and stamina.
In Cornwall, England, there’s a hidden gem in the very south, right on the beach: the Minack Theatre, which is a Roman style open-air theatre carved into steep granite cliffs jutting into the sea. The visitor centre demonstrates the history and the future of the theatre. Walking through the exhibition, looking at the descriptions and pictures, it got revealed that this mind-blowing art creation was built by only one woman, Rowena Cade, whose spirit is still present!
Rowena bought the land at Minack Point, which by the way means ‘stony/rocky place’ in Cornish, in the 1920s, and built a house here. Then it all began in 1929, when a local group of players “staged” Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream in a nearby meadow. After this, Rowena decided to offer her garden for their next production, which was The Tempest. To provide the perfect place for the play, Rowena and her gardener, Billy Rawlings, made a terrace and rough seating, so the play could be staged in 1932. And it didn’t disappoint anyone: the performance and the setting were big success (even though there was no formal lighting, but batteries and car headlights lighted up the stage).
After that performance, the theatre’s improvement and continuous perfection became Miss Cade’s life goal. If you look around today, you see that everything is made of concrete which was mixed with local beach sand: the stairs leading from the sea-level up to the top of the cliff wall, the seats, many of them with a name of a play or performance intricately chiselled into them, and even the short moulded pillars along the stairs, that are holding the rails. Also the stage, which is suitable for various scenes: balcony, terrace, background of vaulted walls, pillars. To soften the stones’ and the concrete’s greyness, a tropical garden has been built above the theatre, which makes the whole view more vivid, and takes the visitor to the Mediterranean.
And now imagine all that hard work that this lady put into the construction: carving the cliff, hauling stones and sand up from the beaches on that dangerously steep and winding cliff side path, or carrying stuff down from the house, mixing the building material, constructing all the bits and pieces, decorating them, etc. In every condition: wind, rain, sun, in summer heat or on cold winter days. Until she died at the age of 89. I find it admirable that she took her ambitions through with hard work and exemplary stamina regardless of weather conditions, war, age, and she built something truly remarkable, which will persist for the later generations, too. That’s what I call womanpower!
If you ever visit the Minack Theatre, it’s worth checking out their program, as it would be a cherry on top of the cream to see an actual play here.
